This is a work I do with my Grade 10s quite early on in the year. I find this is one of those tasks which is always effective.
The idea behind this is two-fold it works with a new medium- pen (fine liners) and specifically with stippling- a painstakingly slow but very effective method. Stippling is ultimately using dots to create an image. The closer the dots are the darker the area the further apart they are the lighter the area appears.
The idea behind this task is for brainstorm working with a theme- as this is one of their first experiences I scaffold the process, taking them through each step at a time. They start with the theme Education and brainstorm to find their own specific theme/ or concept that they can relate images to. Once they have this concept they find images to compile to make their composition.
Once they have their composition. I make a copy of it. They tear up this composition and place it almost like a shattered image on an A3 page. They then draw this composition, using dots on their A3 sketch pads.
Why tear it up? The reason for this is that it forces the image to become more obscure, so that the learners left brain no longer recognises what they are drawing and the right side of the brain (the creative side) can take over. This results in a much more accurate and effective compositions.
Along with this task there is a research component. Here the learners research Neo-Impressionism/ Pointillism. They also have to tie this back into their own work.
I have attached my rubrics for this task below
