Every year I devise a theme for this task. This year it was a Right Royal Affair. The idea behind this task is that the learners design and make an outfit out of recycled materials. Once the outfit is made they then come up with a routine to model it in a Fashion Show for the parents.
I have found that this activity is highly successful in many ways- it allows for creativity and those kids who are really arty to show off their ability but also it helps the kids who don't see themselves as artistic to create something workable too! The fashion show performance not only is an ideal group work task but it is a great space for learners to build their confidence.
The learners are marked throughout this whole process- a motivation in itself but I found from the learners feedback that they really enjoyed this task!
I have attached worksheets and rubrics for this task-
The task is structured with the learners beginning with research on their given theme- I have found that it is always useful to conduct research of images etc before- as this improves the quality of the learners work. They then design 3 outfits of which the final chosen outfit is drawn in colour and labelled. The learners then make the outfits out of any waste materials they can find- the more the better. They then spend a few lessons devising routines which are timed and use vocal cues in the music to insure they maintain the same length. They then present their routines in their outfit in front of their parents one evening.
