When gardening in a small area it's always hard to find the space to plant things that you know will take up space.
I once heard of someone who planted Butternut up a trellis and used small boxes to hold the butternut. I though this was a great idea- it saves space and butternut could take over a whole bed.
I grew the butternut from seed- it is very fast growing- literally sprouted leaves within 7 days of planting. I then transplanted them to a section in my garden next to a trellis- I have used a pallet as a trellis. As the butternuts grew I tied them on to the trellis.
Once the flowers started I realized that I couldn't do the box idea as there were too many flowers and they were rather close together. So instead I build a shelving system to carry the weight of the butternut.
It is made out of dowel sticks and mesh (to allow for drainage.), which are joined with cable ties. The idea is that as the flowers turn into butternuts they will rest on the mesh allowing for the mesh to hold their weight.
